CLASSOCTOBER19PM

You’re somewhat comfortable with free-motion quilting but want to improve your skills. In this class, we’ll look at techniques to reinforce free-motion basics,  combine patterns for more variety, and improve your consistency, all with immediate feedback from an in-person environment.

You’ll be well on your way to mastering free-motion quilting after this class!

Dates of Class - Saturday October 19th

Time of Class - 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Class Fee - $25 includes Instruction Fee only

Location: The Hobby Horse Quilt Shoppe.  This is an In-Person Class

What to bring to class:

  • Sewing machine in good working order (with extension table)
  • Darning (free-motion foot) CRITICAL TO CLASS SUCCESS
  • Sewing machine manual
  • Needles – Size 12/80 (universal or microtex or quilting)
  • Basic sewing kit – (seam ripper, quilter's awl, thread snips, etc.)
  • Machine quilting gloves (if you have them)
  • Threads (contrasting threads – dark for the top and light for the bobbin or vice versa – use up some of those left-over bobbins)
  • SCRAP paper. I use recycled sheets of 8 ½" by 11" and put them on a clipboard.
  • A smooth pen or pencil (no erasers allowed) – Sharpies are excellent.
  • Three or four quilt sandwiches. No larger than 16" square, no smaller than 12" square. Best if the batting and backing are slightly larger than the top piece. Layer the batting in between two layers of fabric. Use muslin or pillow panels or ugly fabric. There's no need for basting – we'll "baste" them together with the iron.

 Pre-Class Work:

Use your manual or verify with your dealer for the following:

      • Try installing the darning foot
      • Find out how to lower/cover the feed dogs on the sewing machine

This class focuses on free motion, so I expect you'll understand the basics of your sewing machine. Here are some of the topics we'll cover:

How to transfer designs to fabric,

  • How to learn new patterns,
  • What free-motion foot is best,
  • How to quilt a large quilt on the domestic sewing machine,
  • Tension,
  • Etc.
